About This Course

Welcome to the School of Medicine Grant Writing Short Course!

In collaboration with the UW School of Medicine and the Institute of Translational Health Sciences, this course is designed to assist investigators in writing research and career development grants, principally focused on NIH applications. The purpose is to understand the format and strategies for writing a high-quality grant. This includes an appreciation for both the science and art that improves the probability of a successful outcome of the grant review process.

Class Expectations

o Attend all class sessions (or do make up if clinical duty causes a missed class)

o Attend one mock study section (where your grant will be reviewed by peers and mentors)

o Timely submission of assignments, including specific aims, significance and innovation, methods, analysis and power, and entire grant application.

o Written review of your peers’ submissions, including specific aims, significance and innovation, methods, and entire grant application

o Mentor will review your grant section submissions and attends the mock study section of advisee, preferably for all three hours
